A few weeks ago it would have never crossed my mind that the saying “Going home for the holidays” could be a hurtful saying for some. I never went off to college so to speak, I moved to the other side of the city and attended a local university, so going home for the holidays was foriegn to me but a few of my friends always looked forward to going home over the long Christmas break. I also looked forward to my friends that did go off to college to come home so we could catch up.

But a few weeks ago one of my daughters friends was kicked out of her house, and she has come to stay with us. Now I’m staying to understand this word call “Home” is relative. That place that we all consider a safe warm place called home is not the same for everyone. Some people have bad memorizes of home and never want to go back to that place, so saying “Going home for the holidays” is not quite appealing to them. It brings back all the hurt and pain that they left when they turn their back on that place or it turned their back on them.

As I was sadden by this realization I was reminded of another homeless man that still went on to accomplish great things.  Jesus left the comforts of heaven to come to earth to save the world, but he didn’t receive a warm welcome for the task He came to accomplish. He also at one point had a home with his mother Mary and father Joseph, but He to left that home for the opportunity to reach out to people that truly needed him. There is a part of the Bible that says, “The foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.”

You might be wondering what’s my point. I say this because if we are truly going to live like Jesus lived, then we have to learn to love people where they are and how do we do that if we don’t consider where they are. We so often assume that everyone grew up like we did or came from a similiar background. Just because we have something in common doesn’t mean we have everything in common. It’s those uncommon things that makes the relationship sweet. But often before those differences can make the relationship sweet they bring bitterness in the form of conflict and its through the conflict that intamcy is formed.

So lets make room for the people in our lives so they can fill at home with us. Lets love like Jesus love and change the world for the better.

From the Heart

Have you ever had one of those nights where you just can’t sleep? Well that was me last night. After talking with daughter about a friend’s betrayal I was left sleepless. I felt deep sorrow for my daughter, but I was even more in angst over her friend’s actions.

Not to get into get detail, but the young lady was involved in a multiple partner encounter. This is a nice girl; she is smart, pretty and lives at home with mom and dad in a gated community. With all the sex on the radio and TV I see how young people get themselves all twisted. But for this young girl to find herself in this situation is disturbing.

It hurts my heart. It truly reminds me that we Christians have to be on our job in this sick world. The have to start being more vocal with the truth. It’s time to let the world know what we are for and not just what we are against. God came that we might have life and live it to the fullest. We have to stop hating sinners, because we all have sinned and are going to continue to sin. The goal is to limit the occurrence of sin in our life and spread the love of Christ to those around us.

Play time is over; the game is in full effect. Daily young people are going astray because we give them nothing to live for. We don’t challenge them in their walk with Christ, we don’t give them opportunities to live out their faith, and too often we rescue them and don’t give them the opportunity to give God move in their life. As parent friends, or whatever we remove the struggle and difficulty, but it’s that difficult that moves you to the feet of Jesus. We also hide our difficulty and act like everything is ok, instead of being vulnerable and real and letting people see God move us through the difficult situation.

The occurrence last week weighs heavy on my heart and I just wanted to spend some time with you all to remind you that we battle is in full effect, we have to gear up and get in the game because their our lives at stake.
